Whimzy Theatre Projects is a mobile theatre education provider of flexible and accessible theatrical learning in Rochester, Minnesota, and beyond. Recognizing that traditional, location-bound programs often present barriers to participation due to transportation, rigid scheduling, and limited specialized instruction, Whimzy brings high-quality, tailored training directly to individuals, schools, and organizations. Our client-centered approach ensures that the transformative power of theatre is accessible to a broader and more diverse audience.
Our Mission
To empower individuals and organizations of all ages by providing accessible, high-quality theatre education directly to their location. Through personalized programs, we cultivate creativity, build practical skills across all theatrical disciplines, and foster a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts, meeting our students where they are to enrich communities.
Our Journey
Whimzy Theatre Projects was founded by Denise Ruemping, who has over 25 years of experience working with children and over 15 years working with youth in theatre. She began her career as a Girl Scout day camp director, then later, after earning a Bachelor's in Elementary Education, taught middle school math. After realizing that classroom teaching under strict and rigid curriculum wasn't where she wanted to be, she returned to college and earned a second major in Theatre Arts.
Ruemping was the education director for the Rochester Civic Theatre for ten years, and she also served as director of high school productions at Byron High School, her alma mater. Later, she became the director of education and youth programming for the Duluth Playhouse. She has always considered herself to be an educator first and an artist second. She holds a master's degree in Clinical Psychology and is interested in the human condition and how arts education can help children grow and develop.

The idea for Whimzy Theatre Projects came about through Ruemping's extensive experience in theatre education. She realized that there was a persistent demand for accessible, on-site programming, and years of experience confirmed that flexible, tailored instruction was what was needed. That's what Whimzy was built to provide.
